KIA ALLOCATES FUNDS TO SUPPORT KIVALLIQ INUIT DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

RANKIN INLET, NU – April 3, 2020 – The Kivalliq Inuit Association (KivIA) is pleased to announce the commitment of funds received through the Federal Indigenous Community Support Fund; to create and deliver three (3) temporary programs for its members. These funds were committed to support the health and wellbeing of Kivalliq Inuit and avoid transmission of the COVID-19 virus.

Inuit Elders Support Fund – will provide enrolled elders 60 years of age and older living in the Kivalliq with financial support to purchase local grocery store merchandise as their needs determine.

Traditional Activities Support Fund – will be a one-time financial contribution to support traditional activities and physical distancing. Program areas include: on the land activities, harvesting activities, and arts & crafts. Priority will be given to applications that best demonstrate the objectives of this fund.

Community Essentials Aid Fund – Each community will be eligible for a financial contribution to support the continuation of their local radio station, snow removal on community access roads, and the purchase and distribution of food and cleaning supplies.
These programs will be available in the coming weeks and further details about how to apply will be provided on our website kivalliqinuit.ca or by contacting your Community Liaison Officer (CLO).
The contingency fund will be used for special circumstances and to provide additional relief as the public health emergency requires.

The Kivalliq Inuit Association is a “Designated Inuit Organization” (DIO), which represents the interests of all Inuit living in the Kivalliq Region, acts as a lobbying group, administers and monitors certain provisions of the Nunavut Final Agreement in the Kivalliq Region.
